Boating, Kayaking, Fishing & Surfing

Puerto Jimenez / South Osa Peninusla

Photo courtesy of Crocodile BayTours, boats & kayaking - You can go on organized boat tours with one of the local outfits or you can just rent the boat with captain for a few hours of fun and make your own tour. There are organized tours which go to the Rio Esquinas and along the shores of the Golfo Dulce educating you about the fjords and local lore. If you want to tool along randomly and explore & maybe drop a line or even water ski -catch up with a few of the local hotels who have boats and will take you out. Kayaking is always a good time on the Golfo Dulce. Take a sunset tour through the mangroves and paddle your way to sunset. Have fun on the water!

As with the hotels — it is best to make a reservation with guides in advance. Many of the hotels & lodges will also book guides & make reservations for you so be sure to ask.

Kayaking & Exploring

Photo courtesy of Crocodile BayWant to explore mangroves by kayak? See wildlife up close & really in your face! There are a few very popular kayak trips to take & they are good for thiose of any ability- even if you have never been in a kayak before. The sunset kayak trip is a blast and you might be lucky enough to be out when the bio phosphorescence is really bright. These are small organisms that light up with the waters movement. Your paddle & the surrounding water is aglow with these creatures- no they don’t bite! And it is a beautiful sight.

There are also Golfo Dulce Tours by boat you can take which will dart you around the Gulf exploring the fjords & hiding places. Swim with the Dolphins, go on a turtle & whale watch. Many of the tour companies you can contact directly from this site and arrange your adventures.

Surfing

Considered one of the longest lefts in the world, when the swell goes in the right direction you can connect to different sections for an 800 meter (more than 2400 feet) long ride. So long, in fact, that it’s easier to walk back up the beach than it is to paddle back to the starting point! From here you can take a boat across the Golfo Dulce to Matapalo or drive through Puerto Jimenez to get there.

Punto Burica This very remote & little explored reef break, accessible only by boat from Pavones, is the last beach to the south on the Pacific coast.

Matapalo This tiny little surfers paradise boasts three fantastic surf breaks and is surrounded by tropical rainforest.

If the surf is flat:

  • Go tree climbing & waterfall rappelling for a thrill.

  • Get a guide & go for a jungle hike. Matapalo is teeming with exotic birds, amphibians, monkeys & all kinds of cool insects!

Go have a cold one at Martina’s Bar! Enjoy the beautiful beach or go to town & check your email & get supplies.
