Piedras Blancas — Rainforest of the Austrias is a tract of the Esquinas Forest located north of Golfito, and although separate, is considered part of Corcovado National Park. The local farmers decided to turn to Eco- Tourism as an alternative source of income and in 1993 the Austrian government decided to support the local population and their efforts to save the forest by offering financial support. A rainforest lodge and biological station offer employment to 20 men and women from La Gamba, many of whom used to be loggers and hunters. |

 Both Corcovado & Piedras Blancas represent the second most diverse eco-systems on the planet. Home to more plant & animal species than Central & North America combined. There are many efforts underway to create connecting corridors between the two parks that once complete will provide critical migration routes guaranteeing the continuation of their diversity. To hike through Piedras Blancas and Corcovado Park and explore its canopy is to appreciate first hand the necessity of preserving these two unique eco-systems. There are a few ways to get here — daily flights to Golfito, driving the Pan American Highway to La Gamba and taking a water taxi from Golfito or Puerto Jimenez to the various eco lodges scattered along the coast.
