Drake Bay / North Osa Peninsula

Drake Bay is one of the most remote and natural settings that tourists will encounter in Costa Rica. The abundance of wildlife, particularly birds, combined with great accomodations and friendly people make this one of the most spectacular and memorable places to visit.

It is very beneficial to hire a guide and there are tour guides available - just ask or check our guide listings. If you are a birder you will see far more birds with guides. Hiking, horseback riding, backpacking, canopy tours, fishing, beach, surfing, kayaking, yoga, waterfall rappelling- everything you might want to do is all available!
Drake is host to many amazing beaches, great rainforest hikes and is the North gateway to Corcovado National Park. 45 minutes offshore is Cano Island, where you can snorkel, dive and enjoy the afternoon.

Activities And Conservation In Drake Bay

Drake (pronounced Drak Cay by the locals) is only accessible by air and water. Although there is a new road, we do not recommend taking a rental car on it as it is seasonal and rains can come at all times of the year here.

You can now fly directly to Drake as the new airstrip is open. This unfortunately eliminates one of the most spectacular boat rides through the mangroves and river delta into the ocean and around a point to Drake Bay.

This is truly an outdoor lover’s paradise. Hiking, fishing, scuba diving, snorkeling, sea kayaking, and sunbathing are just some of the many outdoor activities here.

If you are looking for shopping, night life, and luxury, this is definitely not the place. One small store (pulperia) and a small disco that is open on Saturday nights (that may remind you more of a high school dance than a disco) are the total sum of shopping and night life. However, if you are looking for natural beauty, wilderness rain forest, lots of wildlife, friendly people, and a place to get away from it all then we highly recommend Drake as your getaway vacation destination.

The resorts here all provide meals so there isn't much in terms of restaurants either. Bring sunblock, first aid supplies, medication, and anything else you may need while you are here as the pulperia is not that well stocked.

Surfing

With one of the longest left breaks on the planet — southern Costa Rica is well known to you surfers. Wax your board & paddle out for some of the gnarliest surfing ever!

Drake Bay
If you want adventure travel — well Drake Bay is for you - it is remote & wild. And isolated. The isolated surf spot is accessible only by boat and offers several areas of long, powerful waves during a big swell.

If the surf is flat:
  • The beaches are beautiful, the rainforest is right there and animals & wildlife galore! Get out the binoculars & watch the feathered spectacular birds!

  • You are at the northern gate of Corcovado so go explore — get a guide to go with you & you will not be disappointed. Corcovado is the largest virgin lowland tropical rainforest in Central America

  • Go snorkeling & diving. Get PADI certified if you aren’t already. Rental snorkeling, diving equipment is available from a few establishments. Go to Cano Island just offshore & explore the island. There are stone spheres, which are believed to have been carved by the Pre-Columbian, who used to inhabit the island.

The coral reefs are bursting with life just off shore & that is a major draw here

    Caño Island Biological Reserve

Caño Island Biological Reserve is a 480 are (200 hectare) park, 12 miles off the coast which rises 296 feet (90 meters) above sea level. The island is 740 acres (300 hectares) and is covered by virgin tropical wet forests. It is of interest primarily for its inshore coral reefs and its importance as a Pre-Colombian burial ground. The island is ringed with secluded white sand beaches that attract olive ridley turtles. There are no poisonous snakes here (except sea snakes).

Residents of Cano Island include giant frogs, a variety of hummingbirds, and three mammal species: a marsupial, the paca (which was introduced) and a bat. Only 13 terrestrial bird species are found. Snorkelers can see brilliant tropical fish in the waters just offshore as well as moray eels among the coral beds. A little more offshore there are common & bottle nosed dolphins, and the sperm, pilot & humpback whales, which migrate from Alaska.
