Dominical Cabins
|
| More than half way down the length of Costa Rica, on the Pacific Coast, you’ll find Dominical. Until the seventies this tiny little town was pretty much occupied by local fisherman & their families. But then it was discovered by intrepid & dedicated surfers. And since then, life here has never been the same. Dominical has been known for many years to the international surfing community because of its consistently good waves. But there is a lot more to this area than just it’s good surfing! |

Activites, National Parks And More In Dominical |
Dominical has steadily gained in popularity over the last 30 years. Only in recent years has Dominical been discovered by those interested in eco-tourism in Costa Rica, attracted to its natural beauty. Now there are plenty of choices for things to do, whether or not you surf! But if you do — well, you will be pretty darn happy. Here are a few other things to do too, waterfall hikes, horseback riding tours, surfing, hiking, sunbathing, hanging in a hammock, restaurants, guided tours, hang gliding, and MORE!
Even with the emergence and growth of the town, it is possible to walk from one end of Dominical to the other in less than ten minutes. But don’t just see the tiny town- you HAVE to go see Escalares (stairs in Spanish). With panoramic views & the most spectacular sunset views in Costa Rica- don’t miss this area. Dominical is a place where you will see quite the mixture of those who want to rough it a bit with camping on the beach, to the more mid range nice hotels with pools, to the private home villas elevated above the town. Dominical offers all budgets & activity levels an excellent vacation. Yes Dominical has it all! Come see for yourself.
Dominical and the area are a pretty easy drive from San Jose and you can certainly do it in only part of a day. A fairly easy drive as the roads are in better shape here than in many other parts of the country. AccommodationsWow- there are a variety of options for the Dominical area. You can camp on the beach (bring all your own stuff), but there are lots of options for hotels, lodges & resorts. Listed below are choices- you can contact them for information and reservations. In the high season when it is a lot busier it is advised to make reservations. High season begins in December and runs through late April and May. Even in the green season it is best to contact your choice of accommodations because some may close for periods of time. Check out our “Green Card” discount card to local area businesses which is good from May- October.

SurfingThe unusual conditions of the beach is what gives its surf both size and dependability. The wave is a beach break with a twist, that twist being the mouth of the Rio Baru to the north. The river empties out of the mountains to the east and deposits sediments that form into a sandbar that spreads like a pair of lazy rabbit ears north and south of the mouth.
Dominical Powerful & consistent beach break with an exuberant tropical landscape. The area is surrounded by rainforest and the Talamanca Mountains meet the ocean just south of town. The river mouth changes all the time, with both lefts & rights and that beach break goes on for miles with several spots to shred. All receive south & west swells.
If the surf is flat:
- There is a lot to do here if the surf is quiet. Hike mount Chirripo the highest peak in Central America at 12,533 feet 3820 meters. You’ll get chilled so go well prepared & get a guide!
- Check out Playa Ballena where snorkeling & diving are extraordinary.
- Go to Uvita & see the whales tail where the wave break into each other & create a natural phenomenon to the beach & makes it look like a whales tail!
- Manuel Antonio is not far, another of Costa Rica’s National Parks.
- A short drive(approx 45 min) to San Isidro if you want to catch a little small city action & watch lots of pretty girls (here there are 9 girls to every guy!)
- On the way to San Isidro is a beautiful waterfall which is breath taking & COLD!
- GO horseback riding, kayaking, bird watching, fishing, hiking- the area has it all!

TransportationReaching Dominical and the surrounding area is easier than one might expect. It is a three and a half hour drive from San Jose by car through some of the most visually stunning scenery in the entire country. Traveling south down the Pan-American Highway below Cartago takes you through the country’s largest cloud forest and the worlds last remaining, sustainable habitat, for the endangered quetzal. The trip by bus is only an hour more with one stop and change in San Isidro. It is only necessary to rent a four wheel drive car if you intend to do some exploring in the mountains or continue traveling further north or south. From Dominical, it is a one and a half hour drive to Quepos by car, 4 x 4 recommended, or an additional half hour by bus.

Real EstateIf you fall under the ether in here Costa Rica and decide to buy property, don’t expect to do so in five minutes during your vacation. Land titles can be a problem so be sure to get a lawyer who can do the research to be sure the property has a title or can be properly titled.
There is beach property, mountain property with beach views, land with titles (deeds). There is property for sale, farms, beach lots and beach property, lots & equestrian property all available. Costa Rica real estate investments can provide income for many years, and provide a second home for your own vacations. Each year, more than 750,000 people vacation in Costa Rica, making investing in Costa Rica vacation rentals a very profitable business. Check the Costa Rica real estate listings and you’ll find that purchasing a home on this lovely country is far less expensive than in many resort areas of the world. Yet, these short term Costa Rica rentals can be leased to vacationers at fees similar to other resort locations, making owning a Costa Rica vacation rental more profitable than in some other areas. (this info is from Costa Rica Real Estate Service).
Keep in mind that the sight of a foreigner frequently sends prices skyward so it might be advisable to send a Tico to scout for you. Find sale prices of surrounding properties from the recent past.
Word of mouth is a great way to find properties. Do not be in a rush, bargain hard and your experience will be that much better for it. Always use colones when drawing up a contract and find a lawyer who is a real estate specialist- this is also where word of mouth comes in handy- ask others who they used for a lawyer and if they used a real estate broker get the name & ask them Questions. Be sure you understand what is written in Spanish.
Ballena National Marine ParkBallena National Marine Park is located in Uvita just 30 minutes South of Dominical, a protected coastal strip sheltering mangrove & wetland systems, it includes offshore waters used by whales & other marine mammals. Ballena includes some of the most extensive coral reefs on the Pacific coast, as well as the offlying Islas Ballena.
Parks And ReservesThere are two national preserves in the immediate area with three more (Manuel Antonio National Park, Corcovado National Park and Caño Island National Preserve) only an additional hour and a half away. To the south is the country’s only totally underwater national park, Marino Ballena. Here it is possible to see a pristine and virgin underwater world with scores of multi-colorful marine creatures, coral reefs and jagged, ash black, volcanic rocks and tide pools. In the hills directly east of town.
